Beloved Community: Through the Eyes of Children

This blog post discusses the “Beloved Community Project” at Salt Lake Community College, an exhibit that showcases photographs taken by elementary and middle school students. The project encourages children to explore Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of a Beloved Community through photography, expressing their unique perspectives on unity, cooperation, and connection.

The article highlights how photography serves as a powerful tool for self-expression for these young students. Project organizers, like Marriane Howe-Taylor, emphasize the value of the project in giving students a sense of importance for their work and connecting them to Dr. King’s ideas. The exhibition was on display at the SLCC Eccles Art Gallery through March 28, 2025.

Over the last few years, I have worked with Marian to leverage her community leadership and expertise in equity, diversity and justice to promote awareness and reputation enhancement for SLCC and her work. I have worked with her to promote events for MLK Day, Black History Month, and Juneteenth. Our collaborations have led to several earned media opportunities for SLCC, for radio, TV, and web.
